Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
Hero
Piedmont is committed to creating safe and inclusive environments at each of our schools. Our vision is to create a school culture where everyone belongs.
PUSD strives to eliminate barriers to student growth and success and foster a welcoming and inclusive environment across all schools. In this setting, students are affirmed in their selves, able to appreciate the strengths and perspectives of others, and learn to collaborate effectively across differences. These qualities are central to our Graduate Profile for PUSD students, who we aim to develop as: ● Empathetic ● Scholar ● Communicator ● Collaborator ● Critical Thinker ● Self-Regulated
Creating a healthy school community requires ongoing effort from everyone—staff, students, and parents. Several school board policies anchor and guide PUSD’s work, including, but not limited to, the PUSD Educational Equity Policy and the Racial Equity Policy. It is essential that those most impacted are meaningfully involved in creating and implementing the policies and practices that shape their experiences. PUSD supports such student-and-community-centered engagement through the PUSD Staff DEIB Council, which creates content and programs at school sites and the Wellness Center and District Office; a monthly Student DEIB Advisory Council that includes affinity clubs and advocacy groups; LCAP Committee and school site-specific councils.
PUSD provides learning opportunities K-12 to foster a healthy school community and support students in developing the desired Graduate Profile qualities. Learning is based on the foundational social-emotional curriculum at elementary levels and expanded and complemented with:
- affinity mentorship
- assemblies
- cultural and religious celebrations
- inclusive classroom practices
- implementing the use of restorative justice practices.

The centerpiece of PUSD’s student-and-community centered approach is the Piedmont Affinity Mentorship Program, a district-wide course taught at the High School level that integrates connection and mentorship to elementary and middle school students with similar backgrounds.
Progress towards this is made by creating inclusive environments where all individuals feel safe, valued, cared for and seen for all parts of their identity.
