Status/Work in Progress
- The Field Turf crew is finishing the turf striping and will infill and finish the install and remove all turf related equipment and materials from Witter the week of 1/15.
- When the existing track surfacing was removed last week the contractor discovered approximately 6000 sq ft of substandard asphalt base underneath. The asphalt was in such bad condition that the track resurfacing company stated that they could not install the new track base.
- A change order has been issued by the contractor to remove the substandard asphalt and excavate and haul away soil to a depth of approximately 12". Next required steps by the contractor are to install geo-structural fabric (per the project Geo Tech engineer), truck in, place, and compact to 95% 8-9" of baserock, and then pave a 3" section of asphalt. The earliest available paving date is 2/1/24. The paving date is weather dependent. If it's raining or too cold the date would be postponed. The new paving will need 30 days to cure. This will push the track resurfacing tasks to Monday, June 3rd.
- Once the contractor completes the aforementioned change order work (paving is complete on 2/1) the balance of their contract work (listed below) and the DSA inspector has signed off on the work, the synthetic turf field will open for PHS athletics. The contractor's goal is to open the synthetic turf sometime between Monday 2/5 and Friday 2/9. Again, the turf opening dates are weather dependent.
- Once the synthtic turf field is open, parking restrictions will remain lifted until the track resurfacing tasks begin on June 3rd. The entire Witter Field track and synthetic turf will need to remain closed the month of June in order to finish the work. In June, during the track resurfacing, the parking restrictions on Palm and Winsor will be kept to a minimum.
- The following tasks will need to be completed prior to opening the turf field.
1. Install x2 pole vault pit boxes
2. Install LAX posts and nets
3. Install x2 football goal posts
4. Finish installing/wiring/testing the x3 scoreboards
5. Finish g-max testing of the new turf/infill (https://g-max-testing.com)
6. Remove all temp fencing, top of bleachers and Wildwood lower playground
7. Remove Bothman portable office/materials and open the Witter parking lot
Parking Updates
Palm, Park View, Winsor - Parking restrictions will remain in place at least through Friday, 1/19. The contractor will inform us when the restrictions can be lifted.
El Cerrito - Parking restrictions remain lifted until further notice.
As a reminder, parking restrictions have been needed to assure emergency vehicle egress during construction hours. This is per the City of Piedmont Fire Department request.
Winsor Driveway Gate Closure
The pedestrian access gate on the Winsor Avenue driveway, which many residents use to access the Piedmont Park off-leash dog area, will be closed for your safety during working hours Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 4pm. The gate will be locked and chained during those periods. Please respect this closure since construction activity on the driveway could pose a safety hazard to pedestrians and dogs.
We will keep the gate open for pedestrian access to the off-leash dog area outside of working hours and on weekends. Please email Pete Palmer if the gate is chained outside of designated working hours.
Drainage Calculations
A 54 page City approved encroachment permit and Verde storm water report was issued on 8/25/23.
Per the City’s request, PUSD has reduced the peak flow rate for the Witter Field area by approximately 20%, largely by detaining the water from storm events in the subsurface piping and rock drainage profile.
The District remains committed to providing regular updates to the community regarding the Witter Field renovation. We understand that construction is inconvenient, and disruptive and appreciate your continued patience, understanding, and cooperation as we complete this important project.
