PUSD Interim Superintendent, Dr. Donald Evans

March 10, 2023

Dear PUSD Community,

As spring approaches and we look forward to end of the school year activities and celebrations, I am also excited for what’s happening right now. At Wednesday’s meeting, the PUSD Board of Education officially announced the appointment of Dr. Jennifer Hawn as the District’s next Superintendent. Dr. Hawn comes to us from Southern California where she has worked in public education for over 25 years (read more about Dr. Hawn here). I have enjoyed spending time with Dr. Hawn and look forward to working with her over the next three months as we prepare for her to take over on July 1. Information regarding opportunities to meet Dr. Hawn will be announced soon. Please join me in welcoming her to Piedmont!

While there is much to celebrate at PUSD, the District’s budget situation does cast a shadow. PUSD is facing a $2.2-million deficit entering the 2023-24 school year. Our goal remains to keep reductions as far from the classroom as possible, but some impact is inevitable. We continue to hope for good news when the Governor releases his revised Budget in May. I will keep you updated on any developments.

Over the next three months, there will be a number of events taking place such as athletic events, concerts, promotions and, of course, graduation. There is much to be excited about, but in the best interest of our students, I must remind parents, families and guests to conduct themselves properly while in attendance. We have had incidents in recent weeks that have resulted in consequences for spectators and have placed our District in an unfortunate light. I ask for your cooperation in making these events a positive and memorable experience for all involved.

Finally, we were honored today to have 91-year-old Holocaust survivor, Leon Rajninger, speak virtually with Piedmont and Millennium High School students during the Academy Period. This is just the beginning of events and activities that we hope to plan for our students in an ongoing effort to build an inclusive community within our campuses.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and thank you for your continued support!

Dr. Donald Evans

Interim Superintendent
