Dear PUSD Community,

I am concerned about the increasing number of instances of hate speech appearing on television, social media and everyday dialogue. Recent antisemitic comments by Kanye West, demonstrations on a Los Angeles overpass and projections on a football stadium in Florida are just a few examples of the current climate in our country and how it has emboldened individuals and groups to bring their hateful views to light.

Antisemitism and hate of any kind have no place in Piedmont. We must work as a community to ensure we all have a sense of belonging and inclusion in our schools and community. Antisemitism works against this mission and we cannot tolerate this or any other forms of hate. Our schools are places for learning and growing where we will continue to condemn antisemitism, teach about its impact and move forward as an organization and as individuals.

While we stand in solidarity with our Jewish families in denouncing acts or words of hate, we also recognize learning opportunities that can come from it. Educating our students about the history and hurt of antisemitism and racism is ongoing in our schools. Piedmont and PUSD have not been immune to these types of incidents in their history and only through education and conversation can we come together. We must ask ourselves, what systems are in place for students experiencing hate crimes/language? What support do we provide for these students and finally, what are the consequences for students committing these acts? These are the questions that we’re answering as we build on the DEI work in the district.

In a statement last week, the Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee (PADC) posted a link to resources for families and educators from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In addition, on November 10, the ADL will host its annual summit on antisemitism and hate.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me expressing their concerns and sharing their ideas. I will provide an update on the District’s plans to further address these issues as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Donald Evans

Interim Superintendent
