The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) did not need to look far to find the next principal of Piedmont Middle School, appointing Assistant Principal, Karyn Shipp to the position after a unanimous vote of the PUSD Board of Education May 11. A teacher and administrator with PUSD for over 25 years, Shipp is a mainstay at Piedmont Middle School, serving as Assistant Principal since 2013.

“I am thrilled to continue my tenure at Piedmont Middle School as principal and continue working with an amazing group of teachers, staff, and especially the students,” Shipp said. “This school has been home to me for nearly a decade and I am excited to serve this outstanding school community in a new role.”

Ms. Shipp began her tenure in PUSD as a Physical Education teacher at Piedmont High School in 1997, where she served as a department chairperson, Women’s Athletic Director, Women’s Varsity Soccer Coach, WASC Coordinator and Assistant Principal during her time at Piedmont High School. She transitioned to serve as Assistant Principal at Piedmont Middle School in 2013, contributing greatly to the positive culture and success of a variety of middle school programs.

“Over the past nine years, Ms. Shipp has been an integral part of building on to the wonderful culture of learning at Piedmont Middle School,” said PUSD Superintendent, Randall Booker. “We are excited for her to now have this opportunity to lead PMS into the future.”

Ms. Shipp holds a Bachelors of Science from CSU Sacramento and a Masters of Arts from Mills College, as well as a California K-12 Single Subject Credential from CSU-Sacramento and an Administrative Services Credential from St. Mary’s College. In her various roles at PUSD, she has coordinated curriculum development, instructional practices, professional development, student activities, budget, facilities, state testing, food service, counseling, master scheduling, and evaluation. Through it all, her focus has always remained in the same place.

“As a leader of a team, I have and always will strive to demonstrate this belief: that children learn best when adults make personal investment in their successes and, more importantly, provide support during their periods of difficulty. Everything I do, I do with the students as the focus.”

Karyn Shipp will assume her new role on July 1, replacing current PMS Principal, Ryan Fletcher, who is relocating to Colorado.
