Superintendent’s Message – Feb. 15th – Indoor Mask Mandate

February 15th, 2022

Dear PUSD Community,

As you are probably aware, the state mandate requiring indoor masking will expire at midnight tonight for vaccinated individuals. While indoor masking remains in place for public schools, this event is a positive step toward the return to normal we have been waiting for.

Yesterday, State Secretary of Health & Human Services, Dr. Mark Ghaly, stated the California Department of Public Health will monitor COVID-19 new case data, hospitalizations, vaccination rates and national/global trends over the next two weeks and will make an announcement regarding masking in schools on February 28th. We will monitor these developments closely and update you of any decisions. I have previously informed the PUSD Board of Education of the District’s intent to align with any new guidance from the state.

These developments are good news and we look forward to more on the 28th, but with the approaching February Break and lessons learned from our return from Winter Break – now is not the time to relax. Whatever your plans next week, be safe, distance when possible and mask when required.

While not yet at the finish line, I believe we are progressing to where the end is now in sight. I am very proud to be part of a community that has rallied and worked together to keep our schools open and safe. Our District and community vaccination rates rank among the highest in the nation, let alone California, and our nurses and health clerks have been outstanding in providing testing wherever needed. The state and country could learn much from Piedmont’s example thanks to your continued partnership. Enjoy your Break and I look forward to ending the month on a great note.
