Sports Overview
The PMS sports program is managed by the Piedmont Recreation Department, which is located across the street from PMS at 358 Hillside Avenue. Team programs include Cross-Country, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field. Eligibility for participation requires enrollment at PMS and a satisfactory citizenship standing in school.
Parents will receive information and sign up forms for each sport by mail. The following is a snap shot of the 2010-11 sports season. Check the weekly bulletin for week-to-week details.
CROSS COUNTRY
Cross-country is a co-ed sport open to all interested boys and girls in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Practices take place Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, after the last bell. On minimum days, practice is from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and on all other practice days, from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. Attendance at practices is flexible, pick the days that best fit your schedule. Attendance at one practice per week is required. Registration will start in early August, and sign-up will also be available at walk-through registration on August 22. The season runs from August 25 to the first week in November.
FLAG FOOTBALL
PMS football is open to 7th and 8th grade boys. There are two teams—Team A and B—which play teams from other schools. Flyers are mailed mid-August, and sign-up is available at back-to-school registration. Practices are held Monday through Friday from 6:30-7:30 am at Witter Field. Games are played after school. The season runs from September 7 through October 27. (Sixth graders play in the Recreation Department’s intramural 5th/6th grade league.)
VOLLEYBALL
PMS Volleyball is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls. Both 7th and 8th grades have two teams—Team A and B—which play other schools. The sixth grade team runs primarily as a clinic, competing only in an end-of-season jamboree. Flyers are mailed mid-August, and sign-up is available at back-to-school registration. Seventh and eighth graders practice Monday through Thursday after school in the Morrison Gym; sixth graders practice Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Redford Gym. The season runs from September 7 through October 29.
FALL TENNIS CLINIC
The Recreation Department’s Fall Tennis Clinic is not a team sport, but is run for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls. The clinic is held at the tennis courts at Bonita/Vista Avenues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-8:30pm for beginners and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm for Intermediate/Advanced players. The clinic runs from September 14 through October 28. Sign up at the Piedmont Recreation Department.
GIRL’S BASKETBALL
PMS Girl’s Basketball includes 4 teams–Team A and B for both 7th and 8th grades—which compete against teams from other schools. Try-outs are tentatively held in late October. The season runs from November through January. (Sixth graders play in the Rec Department’s intramural 6th grade league). Flyers will be available in the Fall.
BOY’S BASKETBALL

TRACK AND FIELD
The PMS Track and Field Program is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls. Boys and girls train together but race separately in after-school meets. The Track season runs from mid-March through early June. Flyers will be mailed out in February.
SPRING TENNIS CLINIC
The Rec Department’s Spring Tennis Clinic is not a team sport, but is run for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls. The clinic is held at the Rec Courts at Bonita/Vista Avenues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-8:30pm and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm for Intermediate/Advanced players. The clinic runs from end of March through May.
