Activities & Athletics

Sports

Athletic programs for Piedmont Middle School (PMS) students are offered and organized by the Piedmont Recreation Department (PRD).  PMS and the PRD share the goal of providing a wide range of quality sports programs emphasizing maximum participation, skill-building and enjoyment.  Team programs include Cross-Country, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field.  Eligibility for participation in PRD sports programs for middle school students is determined by enrollment at PMS and satisfactory citizenship reports from the school.  Information regarding middle school sports and more may be found at:

http://www.ci.piedmont.ca.us/recreation/sports.shtml.

Additionally, a schedule of offerings is sent to by mail to all Piedmont residents, and middle school programs are publicized in the PMS Weekly Bulletin.  The PRD is located directly across the street from the middle school at 358 Hillside Avenue.

Clubs & Activities

On site, Piedmont Middle School provides a number of clubs, activities and extra-curricular events.

Mathletes draws mathematically interested and talented students to meetings before classes begin.  In addition to morning meetings, Mathletes kids participate in competitions with other schools.

Shakespeare Performance Club also meets before school and appeals to fans of the great poet/playwright as well as those eager to learn and perform before student and parent audiences.

Chess Club meets twice weekly during both lunches.  All students are invited to drop-in any time.

Film Club meets after school and welcomes all comers to enjoy learning and practicing computer-based video production.

Jazz Band The Piedmont Middle School Jazz Band is an after school class open to all PMS students (grade 6-8) enrolled in band or orchestra classes. This group meets weekly for one hour after school and performs at various events across campus.  The variety of music styles are studied, including swing, rock, funk, and Latin.

Dances are organized three to four times per year for 7th and 8th grade students, and once only for 6th graders as one of several culminating social event to end the school year.

Clubs are offered based on staff available to facilitate.

Annual Events

Geography Bee: PMS conducts its school-wide Geography Bee as part on the National Geographic Bee competition.  The event is a voluntary activity that takes place at lunch for one week in January.  The competition is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.  Last year, we had about 100 students involved in this fun, friendly competition.  The school-wide winner takes a written examination, with the top 100 scorers qualifying for the state finals in Sacramento.

Spelling Bee: Every year, in January, Piedmont Middle School participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Three grades compete and the school winner goes on to the regional finals.

Talent Show: Each spring, Piedmont Middle School holds its very popular and exciting Talent Show, to showcase the impressive talents of its students.  The wide variety of performances includes everything from magic acts to modern dance to classical violin and flute.  All students are invited to perform in the show.  Auditions are held just to double-check that performances are appropriate for school.  Students attend their grade-level show at an in-school assembly, and then the entire show is held in the evening, and all students and parents are invited to attend. The Talent Show is a very popular and exciting event at PMS.
