6TH GRADE MUSIC

Intermediate Band

Prerequisite:  Previous experience on a band instrument.

This elective is a full-year commitment, and alternates daily with PE/Health.

Intermediate Band focuses on the development of technical proficiency and tone quality on band instruments including brass, woodwinds, and percussion.  The goal is to perform music of varied style for public performance.  The class requires one evening performance each semester.

Intermediate Orchestra

Prerequisite:  Previous experience on a string instrument.

This elective is a full-year commitment, and alternates daily with PE/Health.

Intermediate Orchestra allows students of violin, viola, cello, and bass instruments to develop technical proficiency and tone quality.  The goal is to perform music of varied style for public performance.  The class requires one evening performance each semester.

7TH AND 8th GRADE MUSIC

Advanced Band

Prerequisite:  Previous experience playing a band instrument.

This class, available to 7th and 8th graders, includes work on refinement of technique and tone quality on band instruments, and also includes an introduction to music technology programs (e.g., Garageband, Sibelius, and Smartmusic.)  Emphasis will be on musicianship and ensemble playing.  The goal is to study and perform music of varied styles for public performance.  The class requires two evening performances per year.  Other performances may be added.

Please note that 7th graders can take this course for one semester.

Advanced Orchestra

Prerequisite:  Previous experience in playing a string instrument.

This 7th /8th grade class aims to further refine students’ technique and tone quality on band instruments, and continues to develop students’ musicianship abilities.  The goal will be to study and publicly perform a variety of music in ensemble.  The class will require at least two evening performances per year.

Please note that 7th graders can take this course for one semester.

PMS Jazz Band

The Piedmont Middle School Jazz Band is an after school class open to all PMS students (grade 6-8) enrolled in band or orchestra classes. This group meets weekly for one hour after school and performs at various events across campus.  The variety of music styles are studied, including swing, rock, funk, and Latin.
