Prerequisite: A grade of B or better in preceding year of language is highly recommended. A grade of C should be followed up through conversation with your foreign language teacher and counselor.

First- and second-year world language students develop basic skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing in the target language. Through role-playing, dialogues, simulations and other communicative activities, students learn to use the language as well as to appreciate the traditions and culture of the target language countries. Students will develop skills in grammar and vocabulary study in order to understand new concepts and increase their precision in the language.

As students progress through the succeeding years of foreign language, there is advancement in the study and practice of speaking, reading, listening and writing with increased emphasis on grammar and writing. Authentic materials in the form of newspaper articles, plays, internet resources and poetry that reflect the culture are introduced starting in the third year. AP courses are the most advanced and specifically prepare students for taking the Advanced Placement exams.
