The Magnolia Message: Letter from the Superintendent

cropped-Piedmont-P-circle.jpgWelcome to the Spotlight on Student Learning, Piedmont Unified’s monthly electronic newsletter.  This edition of the Spotlight focuses on service learning and related programs at the high schools that are designed to instill a sense of purpose beyond oneself.   These service learning initiatives are based on research showing that adolescents who engage in community service are happier, less stressed, more solution-oriented, and empowered to solve problems for themselves and others.  For these reasons, a District goal is to embed service-learning in both curriculum and school culture.

Over the last three years, Piedmont Unified has developed service learning projects at both Piedmont and Millennium High Schools, and all high school students participate.  At PHS, the projects are organized by grade level.  At MHS, the projects are school-wide.  The projects address themes such as stewardship of natural resources, discrimination, social justice, poverty, homelessness, and economic disparity.

The projects and related curriculum promote: awareness of the world beyond Piedmont; compassion for all people; global citizenship; and understanding of how individuals can affect positive social change.  The projects also provide opportunities for students to work as a team, to learn outside of the traditional classroom, and think beyond individual achievement.  These service learning initiatives promote project-based learning with real-life applications and tangible results.

In this edition of the Spotlight, you will find articles on our robust Service Learning opportunities for students, as well as information on PEF’s AISCE Summer School. Please read on!

Engagement is essential to build and strengthen our partnerships with families, and for the success of our efforts to continually improve our educational programs and support the social and emotional development of students.  I encourage all families to get involved and participate in some of the many committees that help shape District policy.  Upcoming meetings and events, all of which are open to the public include:
