The PHS Symphonic and Jazz Bands performed their annual holiday concert on December 9th. A highlight of the evening for the Symphonic Band was the performance of “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance. Our study of the theme and variations setting has led to a composition project in the class where every student is notating a theme and composing two variations.
Additionally, this year’s PHS Jazz Band is one of the strongest groups yet and performed arrangements of well-known pieces such as “Afro Blue” by Mongo Santamaria and “The Jive Samba” by Nat Adderley.
The next day, on December 10th, the PMS Band concert featured five bands. This was the first performance of the year for our three 6th Grade Bands and the 7th Grade Jazz Band. With over 150 musicians taking the stage, it was a fantastic opportunity for the students and families to hear the progress made with each year of study.
A highlight of the week for all PUSD instrumental music students was an assembly put on by the PHS Orchestra, Symphonic and Jazz Band classes for PMS and 5th grade instrumentalists. It was exciting to see everyone so engaged by this performance, which was held in Alan Harvey Theater. The audiences were attentive and excited to hear the older students perform. It also gave the high school students another chance at performing part of their programs, working on perfecting their pieces even further.
