Over 70 parents attended the parent education night, which was held in the PHS Library. Although there have been many opportunities over the past year for parents to learn about Common Core math, this presentation was intended to cover the basics of Common Core content and practice standards (“Common Core Math 101”) as well as the purpose and history of adoption of Common Core math.
The December 1st meeting featured three speakers: David Foster, Executive Director of the Silicon Valley Math Initiative (SVMI); Stacy Merickel, a PMS and Havens parent and member of the Math Task Force; and Stephanie Roth, PMS Math Department Chair.
David Foster provided an overview of the shift from California’s Math Content Standards of 1997 to the Common Core Math Content and Practice Standards. His presentation highlighted the central principles of the Common Core math standards (focus, coherence and rigor) and how they are designed to develop all students’ skills to be successful in college and the workplace. Foster also introduced and gave context for the pending issues concerning traditional or international course sequencing and options for compression pathways. He showed several sample pathways that allow for compression without doubling up math classes or relying on summer school. Stacy Merickel provided an overview of the work to date by the Task Force. Stephanie Roth provided a brief overview of the new PMS math courses (CC6, CC7 and CC8), math problems that lend themselves to differentiation for a broad range of learners, hands-on math activities for students, and curriculum materials that PMS is piloting this year.
