Science at Havens is a dynamic and exciting curriculum which
ignites the curiosity of each student. A combination of hands-on lessons, video and text
support, field trips insures that each topic is covered in multiple modalities. Havens is
fortunate to have a part time Science Specialist who helps provide the curriculum with
science expertise and many hands-on activities.
First Graders study plants,
weather, compost and habitats through gardening. Second graders explore cycles through
their own seed-saving garden and following the life cycles of monarch butterflies,
darkling beetles, frogs, and chicks. Third graders study solar system and animal habitats.
Fourth graders learn about the complex interactions of ocean life culminating in a visit
with the elephant seals at Ano Nuevo. And fifth graders discover the ways various
substances mix in chemical reactions that change colors and bubble off gases.
In
addition, the school holds a Science Fair in the spring every other year. On the
alternating years, there is a Family Science Night in which students participate in
theme-based activities with their whole family.
