In recent weeks the District has released information of interest to the broad educational community. This has included the results of parent responses to the Site Needs Assessment Survey and the GATE Survey. The results of these surveys have been presented to the Board of Education and other advisory groups. Additionally, the District has posted a comprehensive report of standardized student assessments, which was also presented to the Board of Education and is being utilized by site councils in their review of each site’s goals for the Single Plan for Student Achievement.

The “Race to the Top” (RTTT) initiative offers an unprecedented opportunity to strategically build on our progress to date and invest in a partnership between the State and local educational agencies to strengthen schools and close the achievement gap. With California’s budget crisis, Race to the Top represents our State’s best chance to engage in the fundamental reforms that are needed to develop our workforce and fuel future innovations – to invest in State and local systems that will accelerate and drive growth in student achievement. The Piedmont Unified School District has submitted its Memorandum of Understanding and has been included as a participant for this purpose.

Shaping Our Future: Education Planning and Priority Setting. It has been over ten years since the Piedmont Unified School District has engaged the broader community in a long‐range planning effort to help shape the future of Piedmont’s public school system. At the end of last year, the Piedmont Board of Education approached the Piedmont Educational Foundation (PEF) and asked for leadership and financial support to engage the district’s educational community in Piedmont’s “Shaping Our Future” Initiative. In response, the PEF Board awarded the district a $25,000 grant and provided two community leaders from the foundation board to serve on the Collaborative Design Team to help in the planning and community outreach. The Design Team has been meeting since late summer to do pre‐planning work in anticipation of launching the initiative this fall. Gina Bartlett from the Center for Collaborative Policy will be facilitating the planning effort.

Collaborative Planning Group: A representative group of educators, students, school support staff, administrators, parents, employee association representatives, community members, and school support group leaders will work together over the next three months to help the school district:

Articulate a common mission for the Piedmont Schools;

Develop a set of guiding principles and priorities that will help inform board policy development and decision making;

Continue to foster a culture of decision making in which individuals from all facets of the school district’s educational community share responsibility for addressing the needs of students today and into the 21st century.

Results from last night’s election to renew the existing parcel tax and to support emergency funding to Piedmont schools during the current State economic crisis show both measures passing comfortably (Measure B – 77.7%; Measure E – 72.7%). These figures are subject to change, but coupled with strong voter turnout, they reflect Piedmont’s ongoing and overwhelming commitment to public education. These measures will serve as essential components of the district’s goal to preserve the depth and breadth of educational programs for all students. On behalf of the Board of Education and all district employees, I wish to extend my profound appreciation to the entire Piedmont community for its support.

On Thursday, June 4, the Piedmont Unified School District will hold a community meeting to present proposed plans for school bus transportation for the 2009-10 school year, including proposed bus routes and bus stops.

June 4 Community Meeting to Review Proposed Bus Routes and Bus Stops

On Thursday, June 4, the Piedmont Unified School District will hold a community meeting to present proposed plans for school bus transportation for the 2009-10 school year, including proposed bus routes and bus stops. The District invites all members of the Piedmont community, regardless of whether they have children in the Piedmont schools, to learn about and comment on the proposed routes and stops. The District will make every effort to address and accommodate any concerns that may be raised about the proposed plans. The community meeting will be held at the Piedmont Middle School multipurpose room, 740 Magnolia Avenue, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

As you may know, in January 2009 the Board of Education decided to lease a vacant school in Emeryville for the temporary relocation of elementary school students during the seismic renovation of their schools. Havens students will be relocated to the Emeryville site, which is approximately five miles from Piedmont, during the 2009-10 school year. The District will need to provide transportation to and from the Emeryville site for approximately 378 Havens students starting in August 2009. Wildwood students will be relocated to the Emeryville site during 2010-11 and Beach students will be relocated to the Emeryville site during 2011-12.

The Lamorinda School Bus Program (LSBP), which has been managing school bus transportation for school districts in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda for fourteen years, will manage Piedmont’s school bus transportation. First Student, a well-respected, national bus company with a proven safety record, will provide the transportation services.

Both the LSBP and First Student are experts in school transportation planning. They have studied the Havens attendance area and proposed four bus routes, each with roughly ten bus stops that would be scheduled one or two minutes apart. This would make it possible for most students to walk to and from their bus stop.

When determining bus routes and bus stops, safety is the overriding factor. In addition to safety, the LSBP and First Student considered traffic congestion and whether the stops would be distributed as evenly as possible through the attendance area. Representatives of the LSBP and First Student will be available at the June 4 community meeting to answer questions and receive public input on the proposed transportation plans.

The District, the LSBP and First Student will make every effort to consider the comments and suggestions received at the June 4th community meeting when refining and finalizing the transportation plans.

Enrollment of Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students who will enter Piedmont Schools in the fall of 2009 will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009, between the hours of 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the following location:

Piedmont Community Center
711 Highland Avenue

Starting February 4, 2009, parents may begin enrollment by accessing the online enrollment process here. The online enrollment process is intended to reduce paper usage and the waiting time in lines on the day of enrollment. Those using the online process must still come in person on March 5th in order to complete enrollment. Please bring paper copies of relevant documentation on March 5, 2009.

Only those children born on or before December 2, 2004 qualify for Kindergarten registration. Children should not accompany parents for registration. Parents are requested to bring birth certificates of children to be registered to show proof of age. Documentation to show proof of Piedmont residency is also required. For a complete list of acceptable proofs, please click here and scroll to page 17 (AR 5111.1). Information on “Assignment of Piedmont Students to Elementary Schools” can be obtained by choosing Administrative Regulation 5116.1. Please be advised that, if you are renting/leasing property in Piedmont, you must present a copy of the property owner’s rental permit from the City of Piedmont at the time of enrollment, along with your rental agreement/lease.

As mandated by state law, parents will be required to complete an immunization record for each child being registered at the time of registration. Parents should come prepared with documented evidence showing complete dates that children have been adequately immunized. State law requires that parents/guardians submit an immunization record prior to kindergarten entry. Additionally, at the elementary level, all students are required to have an oral health assessment (dental checkup) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is the student’s first year in public school.

It is anticipated that each school will have several classes at each grade level. It is the intent to keep class sizes similar from school to school. In order to do this, children may be assigned to a Piedmont school outside their immediate residency area. Every attempt will be made to keep siblings together and to look at school proximity if a shift is necessary. If you are new to the District or have not registered your children previously, please plan to enroll your student(s).

Temporary School Relocation Plans for PUSD

Over the next three to four years, portions of Piedmont Unified School District’s three elementary schools (Havens, Beach, and Wildwood) and Piedmont High School will be under construction to address identified seismic strengthening needs of school facilities.

2009-10 SCHOOL YEAR

The following schools will be under construction:

Havens Elementary School

The Becker Design drawings can be viewed at: http://pusdbond.org/public/Havens_Rebuild_Proposal.pdf

Those students assigned to Havens in grades 1 – 5 will be attending school in Emeryville next year (Ralph Hawley School, 1275 61 St. (and Doyle). Bus transportation will be provided for students, although use of the bus service is not mandatory.

The targeted move-in date once construction work is complete is August 2010. Entering Kindergarten students will return to the new campus as first graders in August 2010, with the rest of the school.

Piedmont High School

A portion of the high school, including the library, food service, Wellness Center, College and Career Center, and some classrooms will be relocated to other parts of the high school campus or to portables located on the Havens blacktop.

2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR

Assuming plans proceed as scheduled, Wildwood Elementary School will be under construction. The same temporary relocation plans as described above for Havens will apply for students assigned to Wildwood Elementary School. The targeted move-in date once construction work is complete is August 2011. Entering Kindergarten students will return to the new campus as first graders in August 2011, with the rest of the school.
