The Piedmont Unified School District is participating in State Compliance Review of Special Education this year along with many other school districts in Alameda County. We would like to invite you to a meeting for parents and guardians of special education students. This will be a chance for you to tell us about the special education services your child has had. We are also interested in learning about your child’s experiences in the programs the school district provides for infants and toddlers. We would like to hear about what you think works and what areas could be made better.

Please join us on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 7pm. The meeting will be held in the Student Services Building on the Piedmont High School Campus. (800 Magnolia Ave, Piedmont, 94611)

If you have any questions, please contact CeCe Lasky at clasky@piedmont.k12.ca.us or 594.2733

PIEDMONT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Elementary School Enrollment for 2012‐13 School Year

Enrollment of Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students who will enter Piedmont Schools in the Fall of 2012 will open on Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the following location:

Ellen Driscoll Theater 325 Highland Ave., Piedmont, CA

Please download documents for enrollment by visiting the District website after February 1, at www.piedmont.k12.ca.us/district‐info/enrollment. Please bring paper copies of relevant documentation to submit on March 8, 2012. Parents are required to bring birth certificates of children to be registered to show proof of age. Children should not accompany parents for enrollment.

Parents must provide, at the time of enrollment, a grant deed or property tax statement and three additional proofs of residency. Parents renting/leasing must provide, at the time of enrollment, a lease AND a copy of the property owner’s rental permit from the city, and three additional proofs of residency. For information on acceptable proofs, please go to the District web site: www.piedmont.k12.ca.us/forms/board/5000.pdf select Administrative Regulation 5111.1.

State law requires that parents/guardians submit an immunization record prior to kindergarten entry. Parents should come prepared with documented evidence showing complete dates that children have been adequately immunized.

To enroll in our Kindergarten program, children must be 5 years old on or before November 1st, 2012.

It is anticipated that each school will have several classes at each grade level. It is the intent to keep class sizes similar from school to school. In order to do this, children may be assigned to a Piedmont school outside their immediate residency area. Every attempt will be made to keep siblings together and to look at school proximity if a shift is necessary. However, students may be transferred to another elementary school in the District within the first two weeks of the new school year. If you are new to the District or your student(s) grade K‐5 are not currently attending elementary school in one of Piedmont’s schools, please plan to enroll your student(s) on March 8, 2012.

Beginning in the 2012‐2013 school year, the Piedmont Unified School District may offer a Transitional Kindergarten program. In keeping with State guidelines, this program targets students who turn 5 years old between September 2nd and December 2nd. Due to proposed budget changes by the State, we are currently determining the feasibility of offering this program.

Updates will be posted on the District Website as they develop.

Art Hecht was a tireless community volunteer, and was dedicated to students in both Piedmont and Oakland. He served on Piedmont’s Board of Education from 1970 to 1982. Art also was very active with the Piedmont Continuation High School (now called Millennium High School). His home was open to students day and night. Art always took the time to listen to “his kids” and selflessly volunteered on their behalf in a variety of ways. In 1998, the Art Hecht Volunteer of the Year Award was established in his memory.

This award is presented annually to individuals who have volunteered their efforts over a period of time and made a difference because of their involvement and commitment to Piedmont’s youth. Following are the previous recipients: Hunter McCreary (1998); Ann Chandler (1999); Ruth Cuming (2000); Lisa Lomenzo (2001); jointly by Cathie Glettner and Marion Souyoultzis (2002); jointly by Fritz and Mary Wooster (2003); Elizabeth (Betsy) Gentry (2004); Cynthia Gorman (2005); Grier Graff (2006); Julia Burke (2007); Maude Pervere (2008); jointly to Anne‐Marie Lamarche and Mark Menke (2009); Janiele Maffei Tovani (2010); and Andrea Swenson (2011). Nominations for this award are now being sought and will be kept strictly confidential. In March, a selection committee will vote on the award recipient, who will be honored at the May 9, 2012 Board of Education meeting where the honoree’s good works can be acknowledged. They also will receive the gift of a work of student art. The student will receive a monetary award and commendation from the Board.

STAR testing measures a student’s knowledge of the California content standards. The results for each Piedmont student have been mailed to parents.

The “Race to the Top” (RTTT) initiative offers an unprecedented opportunity to strategically build on our progress to date and invest in a partnership between the State and local educational agencies to strengthen schools and close the achievement gap. With California’s budget crisis, Race to the Top represents our State’s best chance to engage in the fundamental reforms that are needed to develop our workforce and fuel future innovations – to invest in State and local systems that will accelerate and drive growth in student achievement. The Piedmont Unified School District has submitted its Memorandum of Understanding and has been included as a participant for this purpose.
