Message from Superintendent Booker – State COVID Vaccination Requirement

Dear PUSD Community,

Yesterday, Governor Newsom announced the COVID-19 vaccination will be added to California’s list of required vaccinations for K-12 student enrollment following full FDA approval. I, along with the PUSD Board of Education, applaud the Governor’s decision and the state’s support of our efforts to keep students safe and in the classroom.

As there is no definitive timetable for when the FDA will approve the COVID vaccine for students of all grade levels (currently approved for ages 16+), the state’s policy encourages school districts to continue moving forward with their own vaccine requirements. Piedmont Unified was one of the first districts to approve a student vaccine requirement on September 22nd and this policy remains in effect. All families of age-eligible students (currently 12 and above) are asked to provide proof of vaccination status or medical exemption no later than Wednesday, November 17th, 2021. Students who will turn 12 during the current school year will have eight weeks to administer both COVID vaccination doses to meet the requirement. For example, if your child’s 12th-birthday is Wednesday, October 13th, you would have until Wednesday, December 8th, to provide proof of vaccination. In anticipation of younger students becoming eligible for the COVID vaccine in the coming weeks, we will adjust the policy as needed.

I am happy to report 75% of our age-eligible students have already submitted their proof of vaccination. Families who had not yet responded received reminder notices yesterday.

At its October 13th meeting, the Board will discuss and take possible action on a vaccine requirement for PUSD staff including independent contractors, coaches and volunteers. Currently, over 95% of our staff have provided their proof of vaccination.

I am grateful to our community for its support and willingness to lead the way in this important campaign. Please contact my office with any questions.

Sincerely,

Randall Booker

Superintendent
