PUSD Board of Education formally adopts Resolution 21-2018-19 “Prohibiting any district purchase or use herbicide products containing the chemical Glyphosate” and Administrative Regulation 3514.2 – Integrated Pest Management

On June 12, 2019 the PUSD Board of Education formally adopted Resolution 21-2018-19 “Prohibiting any district purchase or use herbicide products containing the chemical Glyphosate” and Administrative Regulation 3514.2 – Integrated Pest Management.

Resolution 21-2018-19 ensures that, effective July 1, 2019 the District ceases all purchase and use of any herbicide product that contains Glyphosate as one of its ingredients, in any amount or level.  This Resolution also requires that the District inform all outside contractors and their employees to abide by the same restriction on campus grounds.

As of July 2017, the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (“OEHHA”) added glyphosate to its official list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, pursuant to the agency’s legal obligations to annually update the list under California Health and Safety Code section 25249.8.

As of March 2018, the California Environmental Protection Agency has officially advised California residents to limit any child’s contact with surfaces that have been recently treated with Glyphosate herbicides.

Additionally, Administrative Regulation 3514.2 initiates a “Least Toxic Pest Management” strategy.  It requires that the District selects nonchemical pest management methods over chemical methods whenever such methods are effective in providing the desired control or, when it is determined that chemical methods must be used, giving preference to those chemicals that pose the least hazardous effects to people and the environment.

No pesticide that is prohibited by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as listed on the DPR web site, shall be used at a school site (Education Code 17610.1).
