Press Release – New Havens Principal

On Wednesday, May 9, 2012, the Piedmont Unified School District Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Cheryl L. Wozniak as the new Principal for Frank C. Havens Elementary School, effective July 1, 2012.

The selection process included gathering input from Havens staff, Havens parent/community members, and the administrative team as to what qualities were desired in the next Principal. The interview process included a large group interview with representative stakeholders and additional interviews with the Elementary Principals, Administrative Cabinet and Board of Education.

Dr. Wozniak’s extensive professional experiences as a master teacher and curriculum coordinator encompass the qualities identified for the next Havens Principal and administrative team member.

In the area of academic preparation, Dr. Wozniak holds a Multiple Subject Credential, including a Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development Certificate, and a Professional Administrative Services Credential. Additionally, Dr. Wozniak is a graduate of Kent State University with a B.S. in Education. She also holds an M.S. in Education from the University of Toledo, and earned a Doctorate in Education from the University of San Francisco.

Dr. Wozniak’s professional background includes 23 years as a classroom teacher, Reading Specialist, and District Literacy Coach in San Lorenzo Unified and the Toledo Public Schools in Toledo, Ohio. She has also held professorial positions at Touro University and California State University, East Bay. She brings vast national experience as a curriculum coach and coordinator presenting on Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Dr. Wozniak is a published author, writing primarily on the topics of teaching reading and writing strategies.

While her position officially begins on July 1st, this early appointment will allow for a smooth transition period with students, staff, and parents.

Frank C. Havens Elementary School

The Havens School community is located in Piedmont, a city of about 10,000 residents nestled in the hills above the San Francisco Bay. With approximately 495 students and 35 teachers, Havens has a high academic performance record. The outstanding staff provide a remarkable education and learning environment for all students. The 2011 API was 952, meeting all of its growth targets and APR criteria.

The residents of Piedmont demonstrate a strong sense of community and are committed to maintaining and enhancing educational programs, services, and school facilities. Parent participation in school activities is extensive; parents and community members have developed a variety of support organizations that work collaboratively with staff to support the needs of the school system.
